What is Nadi Dosha? Causes, Effects & Remedies Explained

Of all the compatibility factors checked during kundali matching, Nadi Dosha is often the one that causes the most concern. It carries the highest weightage in the Ashta Koota system — 8 out of 36 points — and is traditionally associated with health problems, difficulties with children, and marital discord.

    What is Nadi?

In Vedic astrology, the 27 Nakshatras are divided into three groups called Nadis, each corresponding to one of the three doshas in Ayurveda:

    NadiDoshaNakshatras
Aadi NadiVata (Wind)Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Moola, Shatabhisha, Poorva Bhadrapada
Madhya NadiPitta (Fire)Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Poorva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Poorva Ashadha, Dhanishtha, Uttara Bhadrapada
Antya NadiKapha (Water)Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati

    What Causes Nadi Dosha?

Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners share the same Nadi — both Aadi, both Madhya, or both Antya. The logic is that two people with the same Nadi have identical elemental constitutions — rather than complementing each other, they amplify the same qualities, leading to imbalance.

    Effects of Nadi Dosha

Aadi Nadi Dosha: Associated with health problems related to the nervous system. Classical texts link this with difficulties conceiving and potential conflict in early married life.

Madhya Nadi Dosha: Associated with emotional intensity, ego clashes, and recurring disagreements between strong-willed partners.

Antya Nadi Dosha: Associated with financial challenges and slow-moving problems that build up over time.

Note: These are classical descriptions from traditional texts. Many modern Jyotishis use Nadi Dosha as one signal among many, rather than a decisive factor.

Nadi Dosha Exceptions — When Is It Cancelled?

Exception 1: Different Rashi, Same Nadi

If both partners have the same Nadi but belong to different Moon signs (Rashis), many traditions consider this a partial or full cancellation. The similarity in Nadi is offset by the differences in Rashi.

Exception 2: Same Rashi, Different Nakshatra

If both partners share the same Rashi but have different Nakshatras within that Rashi, Nadi Dosha is typically cancelled.

Exception 3: Same Nakshatra, Different Pada

Every Nakshatra is divided into four quarters (Padas). If both partners share the same Nakshatra but are in different Padas, many astrologers treat this as a cancellation of Nadi Dosha.

    Remedies for Nadi Dosha

Nadi Dosha Nivaran Puja: A specific yajna (fire ritual) performed by a qualified Brahmin priest, dedicated to Lord Shiva and the Navagrahas. This is the most commonly recommended remedy.

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra: Regular recitation — particularly by the groom — as a protective mantra. 108 repetitions daily for a set period before the wedding is a common practice.

Donation and Charity: Donating gold, silver, or cloth to a temple or qualified Brahmin is a traditional Vedic remedy for Dosha mitigation.

How Sahita App Detects Nadi Dosha

When you enter the birth details of both partners in the Sahita app, it calculates the Nakshatra for both, identifies the Nadi, checks whether both Nadis match, and if Nadi Dosha is present, automatically checks the applicable exceptions — such as different Rashi or same Nakshatra with different Pada. The app clearly indicates whether the Dosha is active or cancelled. Free to download on Android.

Auspicious Wedding Dates 2026 — Best Muhurta Dates Across India

Choosing an auspicious date for a wedding is one of the most important pre-wedding rituals in Indian families. Whether you follow the North Indian panchang tradition, the South Indian nirayana system, or regional customs from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, or Tamil Nadu — the selection of a shubh vivah muhurat is grounded in the same Vedic principles: the right tithi, nakshatra, day, and lagna, free from inauspicious yogas.

What Makes a Wedding Date Auspicious?

Tithi (Lunar Day): The 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, and 13th tithis of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) are generally auspicious. Amavasya and Chaturdashi are avoided.

Nakshatra (Birth Star): Auspicious wedding Nakshatras include Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati.

Vara (Day of Week): Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are the best days. Sunday and Saturday are typically avoided.

Lagna (Ascendant): Fixed lagnas (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) are often preferred for stability in married life.

    Region-Specific Notes

Karnataka: Follows the South Indian nirayana panchang. Most auspicious months are Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, and Margashirsha. The Uttaradi Mutt panchanga is widely consulted by Brahmin communities.

Maharashtra: Marathi weddings traditionally scheduled on Akshaya Tritiya, during Pausha (December–January), and Vaishakha (April–May). Chaturmas restrictions are generally observed in Marathi Brahmin communities.

Andhra Pradesh & Telangana: Telugu communities follow the Dashakoota (10-koota) system. Ugadi marks the start of the auspicious season. Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, and Uttara Phalguni are highly favoured Nakshatras.

Tamil Nadu: The 10 Porutham system is used. Aadi Pooram, Panguni Uthiram, and Vaikasi Visakam are auspicious periods for community-level celebrations.

North India (UP, Delhi, Rajasthan): Peak wedding season is November to February and April to June. Akshaya Tritiya is considered so auspicious that no separate muhurta calculation is needed.

How to Pick the Right Wedding Date

General muhurta tables give a good starting point, but the best vivaha muhurta for your specific wedding should account for both horoscopes, the groom’s Janma Nakshatra, and local panchang. The Sahita app includes a muhurta feature that generates auspicious wedding date recommendations based on both horoscopes and real-time panchang data. Available free on Android.
