Every Manglik calculator on the internet promises to “check all three charts”, and then prints one word: Manglik. What none of them tells you is what to do when only one of the three flags Mars — which is by far the most common outcome, and the actual meaning of the word anshik. Deciding Manglik from Lagna or Moon (and from Venus, the forgotten third) is a question with a real classical answer, a regional split, and a clear fallback when the birth time is unknown. Mangal dosha (Manglik dosha, also called Kuja dosha) is formed when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. That list never changes. What changes is where you start counting from. The classical method counts the same six houses from three different reference points, and a person is fully non-Manglik only when none of the three is afflicted.
- Lagna (the ascendant). The rising sign at the moment of birth becomes house 1, and you count Mars’s house from there. This needs an accurate birth time.
- Chandra Lagna (the Moon). The Moon’s rashi is treated as house 1. This is the Moon chart, and it needs only a birth date and a rough time.
- Shukra Lagna (Venus). Venus’s sign is treated as house 1. Venus is the karaka of marriage, which is why it earns a column of its own.

Why three at all? Because the three reference points answer different questions. The Lagna describes the body and the outward personality, the Moon describes the mind and emotional life, and Venus describes the marriage itself. Three charts, three verdicts: a worked example
Counting is simple once you see it done. Take the reference sign as house 1 and count forward, including both ends, to the sign holding Mars. Three real-shaped charts below give the three outcomes you will meet in practice.

Chart A is the case the internet handles badly. One flag out of three, from the Moon, in the 8th house. A cheap report prints “Manglik” and the family panics. A correct reading says: partial Manglik from the Chandra Lagna only, Lagna and Venus clear, and now check the cancellations. Chart B is genuinely heavy — three flags, two of them in the 7th house. Chart C is clean.
Manglik from Lagna or Moon: which one decides?
There is no single national answer, and anyone who tells you otherwise is flattening a real regional difference. What there is, is a workable priority order that most practising astrologers follow.
- Severity beats source. A flag in the 7th or 8th house outweighs a flag in the 1st, 2nd, 4th or 12th, no matter which reference produced it. Chart A’s 8th-house Moon flag matters more than a 12th-house Lagna flag would.
- Lagna leads when the birth time is solid. The ascendant is the most personal reference point in the chart, so where the time is documented, the Lagna column is read first.
- The Moon leads when the time is soft. This is the practical rule, and the next section explains why.
- Venus supports, it does not decide. A Venus-only flag with a clean Lagna and Moon is the lightest form of the dosha there is.

The one thing you should never accept is a bare “Manglik: Yes” with no column breakdown. Ask which reference flagged Mars and which house it landed in. Sahita on Google Play prints all three columns by default, so the question answers itself.
The North Indian 2nd house and the South Indian 1st
Here is a genuine split that almost no calculator explains. In North Indian practice, the 2nd house is traditionally left out when judging Mangal dosha. In South Indian practice, the 1st house is left out instead. DrikPanchang states this explicitly on its Mangal Dosha page and, like the Sahita engine, resolves it by counting all six houses.

This matters at exactly one kind of matching table: a Punjabi family and a Tamil family looking at the same chart and reaching different verdicts, each correctly by their own convention. Why the Moon check is the right fallback without a birth time
The Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours. The Moon stays in one rashi for about two and a quarter days. That single fact settles the question of which reference to trust when nobody wrote the birth time down.
If your time is off by ninety minutes, the Lagna column may be entirely wrong and the Moon column is almost certainly still right. So the correct procedure is not to guess a time and pretend the Lagna verdict is real — it is to read the Moon column as the answer and mark the Lagna column as unverified. What Venus adds that the other two miss
Venus (Shukra) is the natural significator of marriage, spouse and physical intimacy. Reading Mars’s position from Venus asks a narrower question than the Lagna or the Moon: is the marriage significator itself under Mars’s pressure? A Venus flag with a clean Lagna and Moon is read as friction in the relationship rather than in the person or the mind.
Venus also moves slowly against the signs compared with the ascendant — it can hold one rashi for weeks — so the Venus column is far more stable against a wrong birth time than the Lagna column, and roughly as stable as the Moon. That makes Lagna the outlier of the three, not the gold standard, whenever the time is uncertain.
One practical consequence: if a family report only gives you a single verdict, the Venus column is the one most likely to have been dropped. Ask for it. It costs nothing to compute and it is the difference between “Manglik” and “Manglik from one of three references, in the mildest house”. Sahita, free on Google Play, never omits it.
Cancellations apply to the whole verdict, not one column
Once you know which columns flag Mars, run the cancellations. These are conditions under which the dosha does not apply, and the Sahita engine checks each of them.

Notice that the first three depend only on where Mars sits in the zodiac, so they cancel every column at once. The house-specific exception is the one that can cancel a Moon flag while leaving a Lagna flag standing, because the house differs between references. That is the subtlety worth carrying into a conversation with an astrologer.
The last row is the one families lean on. It also answers the question in can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik: yes, and the neutralisation rule is a bonus, not a precondition. What to say when the columns disagree
A disagreement between the three references is not a software bug and it is not two astrologers contradicting each other. It is information. The sentence that ends most of these conversations is short and specific, and it is the one you should be able to say out loud before anyone else opens the subject.
Something like: “Mars is in the 8th from the Moon, clear from the Lagna and clear from Venus, so this is anshik — one of three — and Jupiter aspects Mars, so the cancellation applies.” That is a complete reading of Manglik from Lagna or Moon and Venus in one breath, and it moves the discussion from fear to a rule anyone at the table can check.
If the family astrologer disagrees, ask him to name the house and the reference he is using. Nine times out of ten the gap is the 1st or 2nd house convention, or a birth time that differs by an hour. Both are resolvable facts, not verdicts. Hindu astrology has always carried regional variation in exactly this way.

Should I check Manglik from Lagna or Moon?
Both, always — the classical method is not a choice between them. Read the Lagna column first if your birth time is documented, and the Moon column first if it is approximate, because the Moon holds its sign for about two and a quarter days while the ascendant changes every two hours. If the two disagree, that is a partial Manglik result, not a contradiction.
What does it mean if only the Moon chart shows Mangal dosha?
That is anshik or partial Manglik, specifically Chandra Manglik. One of three references flags Mars. It is the mildest category apart from a Venus-only flag, and it is very commonly accepted at the matching table, particularly when the house involved is the 1st, 2nd, 4th or 12th rather than the 7th or 8th, and when the other partner’s chart is clean.
Why do two calculators give me different Manglik verdicts?
Usually the 1st and 2nd house convention. North Indian practice omits the 2nd house and South Indian practice omits the 1st, so a chart with Mars only in one of those two houses is Manglik on one site and clean on another. The other common cause is a different set of cancellation rules, or a silent noon assumption when you left the birth time blank.
Is Manglik from Venus taken seriously?
Yes, but as a supporting reading rather than a deciding one. Venus is the karaka of marriage, so Mars pressing on it is read as friction in the relationship itself. A Venus-only flag with a clean Lagna and Moon is the lightest form of the dosha, and most astrologers treat it as a note in the margin rather than an obstacle.
Can all three charts be clear and a pandit still call me Manglik?
It happens, usually for one of two reasons. Either the pandit is working from a different birth time or a different ayanamsa, which can shift the Lagna by a whole sign, or he is including a rule you have not seen — some lineages add Mars’s aspects on the 7th house, or read Mars from the Navamsa. Ask which house and which reference, and the difference becomes visible.
Does a cancellation apply to all three columns at once?
Some do, some do not. Mars in its own sign, Mars exalted in Makara and Jupiter’s aspect on Mars are facts about the zodiac position, so they cancel every column simultaneously. The house-specific sign exceptions are tied to the house number, which differs between the Lagna, Moon and Venus references, so one column can be cancelled while another still stands.
