Reading your score: what each band out of 36 means
Astrologers read the total in four bands. The dividing line everyone quotes is 18, which is exactly half. Below it, the classical position is that the match should not proceed without remedies or a second opinion; above it, the question shifts from “yes or no” to “how strong”.

Why a cancelled dosha still scores zero points
This one fact explains most of the confusion around online kundali milan, so it is worth stating plainly. When Nadi Dosha is cancelled — because both partners share a nakshatra but sit in different padas, or share a rashi with different nakshatras, or share a rashi lord — the ill effect is removed. The eight points are not restored. Nadi still scores 0 of 8. Bhakoot behaves the same way: a cancellation through friendly or identical rashi lords lifts the dosha, but Bhakoot still scores 0 of 7.
So a chart can be perfectly safe to proceed with and still show 24 rather than 32. That is the gap behind the most common complaint we hear: “the app said 24 but the pandit said 32.” Neither is wrong. The pandit was describing the match after cancellation; the calculator is reporting the arithmetic. We unpack the whole disagreement in why an app score differs from an astrologer’s score.

Which koota failed matters more than the total
Two matches can both score 26 and mean completely different things. Lose Varna, Vashya and Tara and you have given up six light points across three minor tests. Lose Nadi alone and you have given up eight points on the koota classical texts weigh most heavily. The total looks similar; the reading does not.
The practical rule most astrologers follow: a clean 26 is a better match than a 30 that carries an uncancelled Nadi dosha. Same with Bhakoot — an uncancelled 6/8 or 2/12 rashi count is treated as a real concern about household harmony even when the rest of the chart is generous. Manglik status is checked separately from the 36 gunas
Manglik dosha (Mangal dosha, also called Kuja or Chevvai dosham) is not one of the eight kootas and contributes nothing to the score out of 36. It is a separate test: where Mars sits in the birth chart, counted from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus. That is why a match can score 30 and still raise a Manglik question, and why a 22 with clean Mars on both sides is often the easier conversation at home.
Because the Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, Manglik needs a birth time. If you do not have one, the score out of 36 will still compute but the Manglik verdict cannot be given honestly. A 26 with all eight kootas behaving is a stronger match than a 30 carrying an uncancelled Nadi dosha.
Can I do kundali milan without the exact birth time?
