The rule, stated properly

The exception is usually written like this: if the bride and groom share the same Moon sign but have different birth nakshatras, the ill effect of Nadi dosha is treated as nullified. It is one of three cancellations that circulate together, and the usual attribution in Indian matching practice is to the muhurta literature — Muhurta Chintamani is the text most often named.

Be honest about the sourcing, though. Almost every online repetition of this rule carries no verse reference, and the Quora threads and PDFs that rank for this query pass it along with a condition attached and no citation at all. The condition nobody prints: only six rashis qualify

Here is the finding that separates this page from every other result. Work through the nadi cycle against the boundaries of the twelve rashis and something obvious falls out: most signs contain three nakshatras with three different nadis. In those signs, two people with the same rashi and different nakshatras automatically have different nadis — so there is no Nadi dosha to cancel in the first place.

Only six rashis contain two nakshatras that share a nadi. Those six are the only places in the entire zodiac where a Nadi dosha same rashi different nakshatra situation can arise while the dosha is actually present. There are exactly six such pairs, and here they are.

Mesha, Karka, Simha, Vrischika, Dhanu and Meena appear nowhere on that list. Each of those six holds one Aadi, one Madhya and one Antya nakshatra, so the exception can never be needed there. If someone tells you your Nadi dosha is cancelled because you share a Karka rashi, the correct reply is that you never had Nadi dosha to begin with — unless you also share the same nakshatra, which is a different case entirely.

Pair 1 — the exception genuinely applies

Groom: Krittika, pada 3. Bride: Rohini, pada 2. Both Moons sit in Vrishabha, so the rashi is the same. Krittika and Rohini are both Antya nadi, so Nadi koota scores 0 of 8 and the dosha is live. The nakshatras are different, the rashi is shared — this is precisely the case the exception was written for, and it is one of only six in the zodiac.

Pair 2 — the exception is irrelevant

Groom: Pushya. Bride: Ashlesha. Both Moons in Karka, same rashi, different nakshatras. But Pushya is Madhya and Ashlesha is Antya, so the nadis differ and the couple already scores the full 8 of 8. There is no dosha, no cancellation and nothing to argue about. Families sometimes celebrate a “cancellation” here that never happened.

Pair 3 — same nadi, different rashi

Groom: Hasta (Kanya). Bride: Moola (Dhanu). Both Aadi nadi, so the dosha is present and scores 0. The rashis differ, so this exception does not apply at all — a different cancellation has to be tested instead. The hidden condition about which nakshatra comes first

Several blogs add a rider: the groom’s nakshatra must come earlier in the sequence and the bride’s later, or the cancellation does not hold. Applied to Pair 1 above, that means Krittika for the groom and Rohini for the bride is acceptable, while Rohini for the groom and Krittika for the bride is not.

This condition is not universal. It appears in some regional traditions and in the writings of individual astrologers, and it is absent from many others. It is worth knowing about, because if your family astrologer raises it you will recognise it rather than assume he has invented it. It is also worth knowing that the Sahita engine does not enforce it, and neither do most mainstream calculators.

Our practical advice: treat the ordering rider as a preference held by some lineages, not a rule of the koota. If it is raised, ask whether the astrologer applies it consistently — including to the other two Nadi cancellations. Most do not. The pada trap that flips the answer

Look again at the pada column in the six-rashi table. Every one of those six pairs straddles a rashi boundary. Krittika starts in Mesha and finishes in Vrishabha. Punarvasu starts in Mithuna and finishes in Karka. This is not a curiosity — it is where the answer breaks.

If the groom is Krittika pada 1, his Moon is in Mesha, not Vrishabha. The rashis are then different, the exception does not apply, and the Nadi dosha stands unaltered. One pada — about three and a quarter degrees of the Moon, roughly six hours of movement — changes the whole verdict. An approximate birth time is enough to get this wrong.

Does the cancellation restore the 8 points?

No, and this trips up almost everyone. In the Sahita engine, as in AstroSage and most pandit software, a cancelled Nadi dosha still displays 0 out of 8. The report removes the ill effect and names the reason in the verdict line, but the points are not added back.

So your total may read 26 of 36 while the report simultaneously says “Nadi dosha: cancelled — same rashi, different nakshatra”. Both statements are correct. Do not let anyone read the low number as evidence that the cancellation failed, and equally do not expect the number to move. It is a verdict change, not a score change.

What if we share both the rashi and the nakshatra?

Then this exception does not apply, because it requires different nakshatras.
