Of the 36 gunas in a kundli match, exactly one comes from varna koota — and it is the one that makes people most uncomfortable, because it uses the words Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. Here is the part nobody prints: this has nothing to do with your family’s community or surname.

It is read from the Moon sign (janma rashi) alone, so two brothers can land in different varnas, and a family that calls itself Brahmin can score Shudra varna in the chart. This page gives the complete rashi-to-varna table, the 4×4 scoring grid, and an honest answer to what a zero here costs.

One point out of thirty-six — start there

Varna is the first of the eight kootas and the smallest. It carries 1 guna. Nadi carries 8, Bhakoot 7, Gana 6, Graha Maitri 5, Yoni 4, Tara 3 and Vashya 2. So before we go anywhere near the classical vocabulary, hold on to the arithmetic: a couple who fails varna outright can still score 35 of 36.

That matters because the score is binary. There is no partial credit. You get 1 or you get 0 — no halves, no quarters. Almost every other koota in the Ashtakoota system has a middle band. Varna does not, which is why a 0 looks alarming on a report and is usually the least alarming thing on it.

The full rashi-to-varna table

Varna is derived from the janma rashi — the sign the Moon occupied at birth — and nothing else. Not the Sun sign, not the Lagna, not the nakshatra. The rule is the four classical elements: water signs are Brahmin, fire signs are Kshatriya, earth signs are Vaishya and air signs are Shudra. That is the entire derivation.

Watch for one common error on other sites: earth and air get swapped. Earth signs — Vrishabha, Kanya, Makara — are Vaishya. Air signs — Mithuna, Tula, Kumbha — are Shudra. The scoring rule: groom equal or higher

Now the part that actually decides the point. The groom’s varna is compared with the bride’s. If the groom’s varna is equal to or higher in the classical order, the couple scores 1. If the groom’s varna is lower than the bride’s, they score 0. That is the whole rule, and it is asymmetric by design — swapping the two charts can change the answer.

Read the grid and the shape jumps out. It is a staircase. Everything on or above the diagonal scores 1; everything below it scores 0. A groom with a water-sign Moon can never fail varna koota against anybody. A groom with an air-sign Moon passes only against an air-sign bride.

Because each varna holds exactly three rashis, the grid expands to 144 rashi pairs, of which 90 score 1 and 54 score 0. So roughly 37 per cent of all possible Moon-sign combinations fail varna koota. It is by far the most commonly failed guna in the whole system — and, at 1 point, the least consequential. This is not caste. Say it out loud.

The four words are borrowed from the classical varna scheme, and in a matching report they describe temperament, not jati and not community. The texts read them as four working dispositions: Brahmin as reflective and principle-led, Kshatriya as assertive and protective, Vaishya as practical and resource-minded, Shudra as service-minded and relational.

The proof is mechanical. Your varna here is a function of where the Moon sat on your birthday, which changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days. Two siblings born eight months apart will usually have different varnas. Your surname, your gotra and your parents’ community do not enter the calculation at any point.

So when a report says “Varna: 0”, it is saying the bride’s Moon sits in a sign the tradition ranks above the groom’s. Nothing about anyone’s family is being asserted. If the vocabulary still sits badly with you, read the row as an element comparison — water above fire above earth above air — and the point is identical.

Three worked examples of varna koota

Groom Meena, bride Kumbha — scores 1

The groom’s Moon is in Meena, a water sign, so Brahmin varna. The bride’s Moon is in Kumbha, an air sign, so Shudra varna. Brahmin is higher than Shudra, the groom is on the upper side, and the koota scores the full 1 of 1. Note that a Brahmin-varna groom passes against every bride in the zodiac.

Groom Tula, bride Karka — scores 0

Groom’s Moon in Tula gives Shudra varna. Bride’s Moon in Karka gives Brahmin varna. The bride’s varna outranks the groom’s, so varna koota returns 0. Reverse the charts — Karka groom, Tula bride — and the same pair scores 1. This is the asymmetry, and it is the single most common cause of a 0 here.

Groom Makara, bride Vrishabha — scores 1

Both Moons are in earth signs, so both are Vaishya. Equal counts as a pass under the rule, and the koota scores 1. Any same-varna pair scores 1, which is why the diagonal of the grid is all ones. Same rashi, obviously, also scores 1 — though a shared rashi brings other kootas into play.

What a zero in varna koota actually costs

One point. That is the honest answer, and it deserves to be said plainly because families do panic at the word. A pair that loses varna and nothing else lands on 35 of 36 — comfortably inside every traditional threshold, since 18 is the usual minimum and 25-plus is considered very good.

There is a second reason not to over-read it. Varna is scored from the rashi, and so are Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot. Four of the eight kootas share the same two inputs. If your Moon signs are badly placed, varna will not be the koota that tells you — Bhakoot, at 7 points, will.

Classical practice reflects this. No standard text treats a varna koota mismatch as a dosha requiring cancellation, the way Nadi and Bhakoot are treated. There is no “varna dosha” in the sense of a blocking defect — the phrase circulates online but has no cancellation rule attached to it, because none was ever needed.

Two things people get wrong about varna milan

Wrong idea one: a low varna means a low person. It does not mean anything about a person at all. It is a label on a Moon sign. The tradition ranks the four dispositions for the purpose of one comparison in one koota, and outside that comparison the ranking does nothing.

Wrong idea two: varna milan needs a remedy. The puja-and-gemstone lists you find attached to varna koota are generic Navagraha remedies, recycled from other doshas. No classical source prescribes a specific varna remedy, because a 1-point koota with no dosha status has nothing to remedy.
