Bhakoot Dosha 5-9 (Nav Pancham): Effects, Cancellation & Marriage

Three websites, three answers. One says Bhakoot dosha 5-9 is barely a dosha at all, another says it harms progeny, and a third does not mention it. The reason nobody agrees is that nobody publishes the underlying list. Nav Pancham is the trine relationship — the 5th and 9th signs from each other — and there are exactly twelve such rashi pairs in the zodiac. Check the rashi lords of all twelve and something decisive falls out: not one of those pairs has lords who are enemies. That single fact explains why 5-9 is called the mildest.

What Nav Pancham actually means

Bhakoot koota (also written Bhakut or Rashi koota) carries 7 of the 36 gunas and is scored purely on the spacing between the two Moon signs. Count from one rashi to the other and back. Seven spacings are possible: 1/1, 1/7, 2/12, 3/11, 4/10, 5/9 and 6/8. Four of them score the full 7 points. Three score nothing, and those three are the doshas.

Nav Pancham is the 5/9 case — navam meaning ninth, pancham meaning fifth. If the bride’s rashi is the 5th from the groom’s, his is automatically the 9th from hers. The 5th and 9th houses are the two trikona houses — children and creativity on one side, fortune and dharma on the other. Both are counted among the most benefic positions in the chart. That is the paradox at the heart of this article: a relationship the tradition treats as auspicious everywhere else scores zero here.

Read the fourth column top to bottom. Eight pairs are mutual friends. Four are friendly on one side and neutral on the other. Not one pair anywhere in the list involves enmity. Compare that with 6/8, where Mesha–Kanya puts Mars against Mercury and Simha–Makara puts the Sun against Saturn — genuine mutual enemies both times.

Why Bhakoot dosha 5-9 always cancels

Every classical treatment of Bhakoot gives the same primary cancellation (parihara): if the two Moon signs are ruled by the same planet, or by planets that are natural friends, the dosha does not apply. The friendship referred to is the Naisargika or permanent friendship table, which does not change from chart to chart.

Now run the cancellation against the twelve pairs. Eight are mutual friends outright, so the cancellation fires without argument. In the other four, one lord counts the other a friend while the other counts back neutral — there is still no enmity, and mainstream practice, including the Sahita engine, treats that as satisfying the rule.

That is the whole answer to the question this article is named after. Bhakoot dosha 5-9 cancels in every one of the twelve possible pairs, and the reason is structural rather than lucky: trine signs are always three signs apart in the elemental cycle, and the lords of same-element signs are never natural enemies. It is not an exception applied case by case — it is a property of the system. The direction rule: counted from whose sign?

A recurring confusion. Bhakoot is counted mutually — from the groom’s rashi to the bride’s and from the bride’s back to the groom’s. If one count gives 5, the other necessarily gives 9. So for scoring purposes the direction makes no difference at all: the pair is 5/9 and the koota is 0 either way.

Where traditions differ is in the qualitative reading. Some lineages hold that the arrangement is better when the bride’s rashi is the 9th from the groom’s — the 9th being the house of bhagya, fortune — than the reverse. This is a preference in interpretation, not a change in the number of points, and it is not applied by mainstream calculators. Look back at the last column of the twelve-pair table — those numbers are not estimates, they follow directly from the friendship table.

Contrast the 6/8 case. Mesha–Kanya loses the 7 Bhakoot points and, because Mars and Mercury are hostile, only scores half a point of Graha Maitri — 11.5 points gone from one planetary fact. Simha–Makara loses the full 12. A 5/9 pair loses 7 and keeps 4 or 5. That is the arithmetic behind “mildest”.

Does 5-9 harm children? What the sources really say

This is the specific fear attached to Nav Pancham, and it comes from a straightforward association: the 5th house signifies children, so a 5/9 spacing is read by some writers as touching progeny. A handful of astrology magazines state it flatly. Quora answers and several practitioner sites call it the mildest of the three and say it is barely counted.

The honest position is that the progeny reading is one interpretive tradition among several, that it is attached to an uncancelled 5/9, and that — as this article has shown — an uncancelled 5/9 does not exist, because the friendly-lord rule fires on all twelve pairs. A cancelled 5-9 still scores 0 of 7

The detail that causes the most confusion at the matching table. In the Sahita engine, as in AstroSage and most pandit software, a cancelled Bhakoot dosha still prints 0 out of 7. The report removes the ill effect and names the reason in the verdict line — “friendly lords” — but the points are not restored.

So a Nav Pancham couple can show 29 of 36 with a verdict line saying “Bhakoot dosha: cancelled”. Both are true at once. If someone reads the 29 as a weak score, point at the verdict line. If someone insists the cancellation should have raised the number, it never does — for any dosha, in any engine that follows this convention. When to stop worrying: a four-line check

1. Confirm both Moon signs from birth details, not from names. A Moon within a degree of a boundary can change the spacing entirely.
2. Confirm it is 5/9 and not 6/8. Count both ways and check the pair against the twelve-row table above. If it is not on that list, you have a different dosha.
3. Read the lords. They will be friends or friend-and-neutral. The cancellation applies. This is where a 5/9 case ends.
4. Check Nadi and Manglik separately. These are the two checks that actually carry weight once Bhakoot is settled.

Is Bhakoot dosha 5-9 actually a dosha?

Technically yes — it scores 0 of 7 in Bhakoot koota like the other two spacings. Practically it is the mildest, because all twelve 5/9 rashi pairs are trine pairs whose lords are friends or friend-and-neutral, never enemies. The classical friendly-lord cancellation therefore applies to every possible 5/9 pair, which is not true of 6/8 or 2/12.

Does Nav Pancham affect children?

Some writers link the 5th house to progeny and read a 5/9 spacing that way, but the reading applies to an uncancelled 5/9 — and, given the friendly-lord rule, an uncancelled 5/9 does not occur. In the Ashtakoota framework the progeny question belongs to Nadi koota, worth 8 points, which is a completely separate check on the birth nakshatras.

Does it matter whether the girl’s sign is 5th or 9th?

Not for the score. Bhakoot is counted both ways, so 5 in one direction is always 9 in the other, and the koota reads 0 either way. Some lineages prefer the bride’s rashi to be the 9th from the groom’s because the 9th is the house of fortune, but that is an interpretive preference, not a scoring rule, and calculators do not implement it.

Why does my report still show 0 if the dosha is cancelled?
