What a rashi calculator actually tells you

A rashi calculator finds the sign the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. That sign is your janma rashi (birth Moon sign), and it is the single value that Indian marriage matching, naming ceremonies, muhurta selection and the daily rashifal all key off. It is not your sun sign. If you have ever read “Leo” in a magazine column and assumed that was your rashi, the tool above will very likely give you a different answer, and the rest of this page explains why that is correct and not a bug.

The tool uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same reference that the Government of India’s Rashtriya Panchang and almost every traditional astrologer in the country uses. How to use this rashi calculator

1. Enter your date of birth. Use the date written on your birth certificate or hospital record, not the date a relative remembers. If you were born just after midnight, the date matters more than usual.
2. Enter your time of birth in local clock time. Do not convert it to any other zone; the tool handles Indian Standard Time and the time zone of any foreign birthplace for you.
3. Type your place of birth and pick it from the autocomplete list. The database covers 14,000+ Indian towns, talukas and district headquarters, plus major world cities, so choose the actual town rather than the nearest metro.
4. Read the result. You get your rashi in Sanskrit and English, its lord planet, the Moon’s degree inside the sign, your nakshatra and pada, and a stability window that tells you how much your birth time could be wrong before the rashi would change.

What your result means: rashi, lord, Moon degree, nakshatra and pada

Each line of the result answers a different question that a family astrologer would ask you at a first meeting.

• Rashi (Moon sign). One of twelve 30-degree divisions of the sidereal zodiac. This is what people mean when they ask “aapki rashi kya hai” and it is the rashi used for Bhakoot and Rashi Maitri in matching.
• Rashi lord (rashi swami). The planet that rules the sign. It matters for matching because Bhakoot Dosha is cancelled when the two partners’ rashi lords are friends or the same planet.
• Moon’s degree. Where inside the 30-degree sign the Moon sat, for example 27°42′ Kanya. A Moon in the last two degrees of a sign is a boundary case; a Moon in the middle is not.
• Nakshatra and pada. The Moon’s position is also read against the 27 lunar mansions (nakshatra) of 13°20′ each, and their four quarters (pada) of 3°20′. • Stability window. The clock range on your birth date during which the Moon stayed in that rashi. This is explained in the next section because it is the part no other calculator shows.

How sure is your rashi? The stability window explained

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so it stays in one rashi for roughly two and a quarter days. Most people are born comfortably inside a sign and their rashi would not change even if the recorded time were off by several hours. But roughly one birth in ten falls within a few hours of a sign change, and for those people a hand-written “around 9 in the morning” on a hospital slip is the difference between Kanya and Tula.

The stability window makes this visible instead of hiding it. If the tool says your Moon was at 28°10′ Kanya and the window reads “Kanya until 12:47 PM”, you know that a birth time after 12:47 PM would make you Tula. That changes your Bhakoot count with any partner, your Nadi, and possibly your Gana, so it is worth settling before you run a match.

One real example from our readers: a groom’s family produced a “corrected” birth time a week before the engagement and the rashi moved from Vrishchika to Dhanu, which flipped a Bhakoot verdict. Rashi vs sun sign: why your “zodiac sign” is usually not your rashi

Several calculators that rank on the first page of Google for this search end their page with a block that says “Aries: March 21 to April 19, Taurus: April 20 to May 20” and so on, or claim in their FAQ that “each month is dedicated to one rashi”. That is wrong on two counts, and it is worth being blunt about because people carry the wrong rashi into a wedding negotiation on the strength of it.

First, the date ranges describe where the Sun is, and rashi in Indian astrology means the sign of the Moon. The Sun stays in one sign for a month; the Moon changes sign every two to three days, so your rashi cannot be read off a calendar month. Second, those date ranges use the Western tropical zodiac, which starts from the spring equinox point.

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the fixed stars, and in 2026 the two frames differ by just over 24 degrees (the ayanamsa). Even the Sun’s sidereal sign is different from the tropical one for roughly the last three weeks of every Western sign. Someone born on 5 April has a tropical Sun in Aries but a sidereal Sun in Meena, and their Moon could be in any of the twelve rashis.

The same pages sometimes add Western element compatibility (“fire signs match air signs”) and “healing crystals” for each rashi. Neither belongs to jyotish. Vedic compatibility between two Moon signs is judged by the Ashtakoot system, specifically Bhakoot, Rashi Maitri (Graha Maitri), Gana and Nadi, which we explain below. The tool reports your rashi in Sanskrit with the English equivalent. The table adds the ruling planet and the common Tamil and Telugu forms so you can recognise the same sign across a family that speaks more than one language.

How the calculator works: sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa, local time and place

Under the hood the tool does four things. It converts your local birth time to Universal Time using the historical time zone of the birthplace (India has used IST, UTC+5:30, since 1947; earlier births and foreign births use the zone that applied on that date). It computes the Moon’s tropical longitude for that instant from a standard ephemeris. It subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa for the birth year to get the sidereal longitude. Finally it divides by 30 to find the rashi, by 13°20′ to find the nakshatra and by 3°20′ to find the pada.

The ayanamsa step is why two online calculators can disagree. Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) is the government standard and the one we use. B.V. Raman and Krishnamurti (KP) ayanamsas differ from Lahiri by a fraction of a degree, which only matters if your Moon is within that fraction of a boundary. A Western site that skips the ayanamsa entirely will be off by about 24 degrees, which is most of a sign.

Place matters less for rashi than for lagna, but it still sets the time zone and, for births outside India, the daylight-saving rules, so do not leave it blank. Rashi by name: the naming-syllable method and when it is wrong

Many elders determine rashi from the first syllable of a person’s name. This works because Indian naming custom assigns a syllable to each nakshatra pada (the Avakahada Chakra), so a child named “Chetan” was, by custom, born in Ashwini’s second pada and is therefore Mesha rashi. The method is a convention, not a calculation. It is only as good as the family’s adherence to the naming custom, and in most urban families today the given name has nothing to do with the birth star.

Treat name-rashi as the fallback for when birth details are genuinely unavailable, and say so honestly when you use it. Why rashi matters for kundali matching

Of the 36 gunas in Ashtakoot matching, the Moon sign and its nakshatra decide all of them. Three kootas depend on the rashi directly:

• Varna (1 point). Assigned by rashi: Karka, Vrishchika and Meena are Brahmin; Mesha, Simha and Dhanu are Kshatriya; Vrishabha, Kanya and Makara are Vaishya; Mithuna, Tula and Kumbha are Shudra.

The remaining kootas (Nadi, Gana, Yoni, Tara, Vashya) come from the nakshatra, which is why the result lists it too. A practical note on reading the result: the rashi calculator on this page tells you what the sky says, not what to do about it. A Bhakoot or Nadi dosha between two rashis is a classical flag with documented cancellations, not a verdict on the couple. Your rashi is the sidereal zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at your birth, also called janma rashi or Chandra rashi. It is found from your date, time and place of birth, not from the calendar month. Enter those three details in the calculator above and the result shows the rashi with its lord, the Moon’s degree, and the nakshatra and pada that sit inside it.

Is rashi the same as a zodiac sign?

No. The “zodiac sign” in newspapers is the Western tropical Sun sign, fixed by calendar date. Rashi is the sidereal Moon sign, which changes every two to three days and is offset from the tropical frame by about 24 degrees. For most people the two are different signs. Any page that lists rashis by month ranges is describing sun signs, not janma rashi.

Can I calculate rashi without an exact birth time?

Often, yes. Because the Moon stays in a sign for over two days, most birth dates have a single rashi for the whole day. Enter an approximate time and look at the stability window: if it says “all day”, your rashi is certain. If the Moon changed sign on your birth date, the window tells you the changeover time, and the without-birth-time matching mode scores both possibilities rather than guessing.

Why can two rashi calculators show different results?

Almost always because of the ayanamsa. Lahiri, Raman and KP differ by a fraction of a degree, and a Western tool that uses no ayanamsa is off by about 24 degrees. The other causes are a wrong time zone for the birthplace, an AM/PM mix-up, or a date typed in the wrong order. Lahiri with the correct local time and place is the reference that panchangs and most Indian astrologers use.

Is rashi from a name the same as birth rashi?

Only if the name was chosen according to the birth nakshatra’s syllable, which was the tradition but is rarely followed today. Name-rashi is a convention that maps the first syllable to a nakshatra pada.
