What this free kundli calculator gives you

A kundli (also written kundali, or janam kundali) is the map of the sky at the moment you were born. This calculator builds it from your birth details and shows:

• All nine grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — with the exact degree each occupies.
• Rashi and nakshatra for every graha, not just the Moon.
• Retrograde marking, so you can see which grahas were moving backwards at your birth.
• The lagna (ascendant) with its precise rising degree.
• Twelve bhavas with each house lord and its occupants.
• Both chart styles — the North Indian diamond and the South Indian square.

How to read your kundli

Start with the lagna. It is the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at your birth minute, and it sets which sign becomes the first house. Everything else is counted from there.

Then find the Moon. In Vedic astrology the Moon’s nakshatra is the basis of your janma nakshatra, your dasha periods, and all kundli milan scoring. Your Moon rashi is what most people mean when they say “my rashi”.

The house column tells you which area of life each graha sits in. Grahas marked R were retrograde — apparently moving backwards from Earth. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde, because they are calculated points rather than physical bodies.

Why the birth time matters so much

The lagna moves through a full rashi in roughly two hours, so a birth time that is off by even an hour can shift your entire house structure. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so its nakshatra can change within a single day too.

If you do not know your birth time, the graha rashis will still be broadly right, but the lagna and all twelve houses will not be. For matching in that situation, use the kundli milan without birth time tool instead, which only scores what can be scored without it.

What each graha signifies in your kundli

Each of the nine grahas governs a distinct area of life. Where it sits in your kundli — which rashi, which bhava — colours how that area plays out.

• Sun (Surya) — the self, father, authority, vitality and confidence.
• Moon (Chandra) — the mind, mother, emotions and instinct. The single most important graha in Vedic astrology, and the basis of all kundli milan.
• Mars (Mangala) — energy, courage, siblings, property and conflict. Its placement decides manglik status.
• Mercury (Budha) — intellect, speech, commerce, analysis and learning.
• Jupiter (Guru) — wisdom, teachers, wealth, children and dharma. The great benefic.
• Venus (Shukra) — love, marriage, beauty, comfort and the arts. Central to any marriage reading.
• Saturn (Shani) — discipline, delay, labour, longevity and hard lessons.
• Rahu — ambition, obsession, foreign things and sudden rise. Always retrograde.
• Ketu — detachment, spirituality, loss and liberation. Always opposite Rahu.

What the twelve bhavas cover

The bhavas (houses) are the life areas. Counting starts at your lagna, so the same graha means different things in two different kundlis.

• 1st — Tanu: body, self, temperament, overall vitality.
• 2nd — Dhana: wealth, family, speech, accumulated resources.
• 3rd — Sahaja: siblings, courage, short journeys, effort.
• 4th — Sukha: mother, home, land, vehicles, inner comfort.
• 5th — Putra: children, intelligence, romance, past merit.
• 6th — Ari: enemies, debt, disease, daily work, obstacles.
• 7th — Yuvati: marriage, spouse, partnerships. The marriage house.
• 8th — Randhra: longevity, inheritance, sudden change, the hidden.
• 9th — Dharma: fortune, father, guru, long journeys, belief.
• 10th — Karma: career, status, authority, public standing.
• 11th — Labha: gains, income, elder siblings, networks.
• 12th — Vyaya: loss, expenditure, foreign lands, sleep, moksha.

For marriage specifically, the 7th bhava, its lord, and the placement of Venus and Mars carry most of the weight — which is why they feed directly into kundli milan.

North Indian and South Indian charts are the same kundli

They look completely different but carry identical information. In the North Indian diamond the houses stay fixed on screen and the rashi numbers move; the first house is always the top-centre diamond. In the South Indian square the rashis stay fixed and the lagna is marked instead.

North India reads the diamond, and most of South India reads the square. This calculator draws both, so you can hand either one to an astrologer.

Which ayanamsa this uses

This calculator uses the Lahiri (Chitra Paksha) ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Calendar Reform Committee for the Indian national calendar and used by most Indian astrologers. It is the same ayanamsa the Sahita app uses, so the two agree.

If you compare against a Western chart, the positions will differ by roughly 24°. That is not an error — Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal one.

Is this kundli generator really free?

Yes. No login, no payment, no limit on how many kundlis you build.

What is the difference between kundli and kundali?

Nothing — they are two spellings of the same word. “Kundli” is the more common North Indian form and “kundali” the fuller Sanskrit one. Janam kundali, janma kundali and birth chart all mean the same thing too.

Why does my kundli look different from another site’s?

Usually the ayanamsa or the house system. We use Lahiri with whole-sign houses, which is the mainstream Indian convention. Sites using Raman or KP ayanamsa, or Placidus houses, will differ.

Can I get my kundli without the birth time?

You can get the graha rashis, but not a meaningful lagna or house chart. The lagna changes every two hours, so without a time the houses are guesswork.
