Navpancham (5/9) is the trine: Mesha and Simha, Vrishabha and Kanya, Tula and Kumbha. The 5th and 9th are both benefic houses, and many Sanskrit commentaries call this pairing auspicious in every context except this one. Every classical treatment of Bhakoot dosha gives one main cancellation (parihara): if the two Moon signs are ruled by the same planet, or by planets that are natural friends, the dosha does not apply. One point that trips people up: a cancelled Bhakoot dosha still shows 0/7 on the score sheet. Step 3: Why a Bhakoot 0 usually drags Graha Maitri down too

Two kootas, one cause

Here is the part nobody on page one explains. Graha Maitri (5 points) scores the friendship between the same two rashi lords that Bhakoot’s cancellation depends on. Friends or the same planet give 5; friend and neutral give 4; two neutrals give 3; friend and enemy give 1; neutral and enemy give half a point; two enemies give 0. So when your Bhakoot dosha is not cancelled, it is precisely because the lords are not friends, and Graha Maitri will be low for the same reason.

Mesha–Kanya is the textbook case. Mars and Mercury are enemies from Mars’ side and neutral from Mercury’s, which gives Graha Maitri 0.5. Add the Bhakoot 0 and this one relationship has cost 11.5 of 36 points. Simha–Makara (Sun and Saturn, mutual enemies) loses the full 12. A pair can lose up to 12 points from a single fact about two planets, which is why a “27 out of 36” with an uncancelled Bhakoot often looks like 22 or 23 once the report is printed.

Work through these in order. Each answer either closes the question or moves you to the next line. Nothing here requires you to abandon the tradition; it only requires you to apply the tradition’s own rules fully rather than stopping at the first zero.

1. Confirm both rashis. Bhakoot needs the Moon sign from birth time and place, not from the name. A Moon within a degree of a sign boundary can flip the spacing. Recheck with the rashi calculator if the birth time is approximate.

What the remaining 29 points look like

Once Bhakoot is 0, the maximum available is 29. It helps to rescore the match on that basis, because the usual bands (18 minimum, 24 good, 32 excellent) were written for 36. Bhakoot 0 with Nadi 8, and Bhakoot 0 with Nadi 0

Nadi (8 points) is the other all-or-nothing koota, and the two are usually read together. Bhakoot 0 with Nadi 8 is the ordinary case: one mahadosha, one clean bill on the other, and a total that can still reach 29. Most families and most pandits proceed here, especially if the Bhakoot spacing is 5/9 or the lords are friendly.

Bhakoot 0 with Nadi 0 caps the score at 21 before anything else is counted. The older texts treat the coexistence of both doshas as the case where compensation from the other six kootas is hardest to find. It is still not automatic rejection: Nadi has three classical cancellations of its own (same rashi with different nakshatras, same nakshatra with different padas, and friendly rashi lords), and if one applies, you are back to a single-dosha situation. Why is my Graha Maitri also low when Bhakoot is 0?

Because both kootas depend on the same two rashi lords. Graha Maitri scores their friendship directly, and Bhakoot’s cancellation depends on that same friendship. When the lords are enemies, Bhakoot stands at 0 and Graha Maitri drops to 0, 0.5 or 1 at the same time, which can remove up to 12 points together. When the lords are friends, Bhakoot is cancelled and Graha Maitri is 4 or 5.
