What this Manglik calculator checks (and what it does not)

Manglik dosha (Mangal dosha, also called Kuja dosha or Bhauma dosha) is the condition where Mars (Mangal) sits in one of six specific houses of your birth chart. This free manglik calculator works out where Mars was at the moment you were born, counts its house from three reference points — your Lagna (ascendant), your Moon and your Venus — and tells you whether the placement is a dosha house, how severe it looks, and, most importantly, whether one of the classical cancellation rules already neutralises it.

How to use this Manglik calculator

1. Enter your name (optional). It is only printed on the result card; it does not change the calculation.
2. Enter your date and time of birth. Use the time written on your birth certificate or hospital record. Mars moves slowly, but the Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, so the time matters for the Lagna column.

What your result means: Mars from Lagna, Moon and Venus

Classical texts check Mars from three places, not one. The Lagna chart is the primary reference. The Moon chart (Chandra Lagna) is added because the Moon governs the mind and emotional life. The Venus chart (Shukra Lagna) is added because Venus is the karaka (significator) of marriage itself. A chart where Mars is in a dosha house from all three is treated very differently from a chart where it shows up from only one — yet most online tools report a single yes/no and never say which chart they looked at. Because the Moon and Venus positions barely change within a day, those two columns are reliable even when your birth time is approximate. Only the Lagna column is time-sensitive, which is why the “unknown time” mode drops it rather than guessing noon the way many sites silently do. Which houses of Mars create Mangal dosha

The six dosha houses are the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, counted from each reference point. Each house is tied to a specific area of married life, and that is why Mars — the planet of heat, conflict and force — is considered disruptive there.

Some competitor pages get this basic list wrong. One widely-visited calculator lists the 4th house twice and leaves the 7th house out entirely, which is the single most important house for marriage. Another site’s house-by-house results table shows six identical rows because its labels were lost in a copy-paste. If a page cannot state the six houses correctly, treat its verdict with caution.

The one real point of variation between schools is the 2nd house: older texts sometimes give five houses (1, 4, 7, 8, 12), and the 2nd house was added by later Muhurta authors and is standard in most North and South Indian practice today. Manglik dosha cancellation rules we apply

Drik Panchang is right when it says that many kundalis show Mangal dosha but in most of them the dosha is cancelled. The problem is that almost no calculator tells you which cancellation fired for your chart. Sahita names it. These are the rules the tool checks, in the order it checks them:

• Mars in its own sign. Mars in Aries (Mesha) or Scorpio (Vrishchika) in any dosha house is not counted as a dosha. Mars is comfortable at home and its heat is constructive rather than destructive.
• Mars exalted. Mars in Capricorn (Makara) is exalted and the dosha is cancelled. Note that Mars in Cancer (Karka) is debilitated — this makes the dosha weaker in expression but does not cancel it.
• Mars in Leo or Aquarius. Several Muhurta texts state that Mars in Simha or Kumbha does not produce Kuja dosha, and a well-known verse extends this to specific house–sign pairs: Mars in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, in the 12th in Taurus or Libra, in the 4th in Aries or Scorpio, in the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn, in the 8th in Sagittarius or Pisces. • Jupiter’s aspect on Mars. When Guru (Jupiter) aspects Mars by its 5th, 7th or 9th house aspect, or is conjunct with it, the dosha is considered neutralised. Many astrologers also accept a Venus aspect as softening the dosha; Sahita reports the Jupiter rule and shows the Venus relationship separately.

Two further rules are common in practice and worth knowing, even though the tool does not score them: Saturn, Rahu or Ketu occupying the same dosha houses in the partner’s chart is often treated as equivalent strength that balances Mars; and a strong benefic in the 7th house of the Navamsa (D9) is considered protective. A qualified astrologer will look at these once the basic verdict is clear.

Anshik (partial) vs Purna (full) Manglik: how severity is graded

Astrologers rarely use a flat yes/no. They speak of Anshik Mangal dosha (partial) and Purna Mangal dosha (full). Sahita converts that into a Low / Medium / High severity using two questions: from how many of the three reference points is Mars in a dosha house, and which houses are involved.

One popular calculator page claims Anshik Mangal dosha “ends after the age of 18” and, a few paragraphs later, recommends “marriage after the age of 28”. Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik? Check both charts together

Yes, and it happens every day. The classical concern is an imbalance of Mars energy between the two partners, so the traditional preference is Manglik with Manglik. But a non-Manglik partner whose chart has Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the dosha houses, or whose own Mars is strong and well-aspected, is considered an adequate match by most practising astrologers. The real answer depends on both charts, which is why a single-person calculator is only the first step.

What you should not do is accept a page that opens by telling you a Manglik–non-Manglik marriage “can even lead to the death of one’s partner”. That fear-first framing appears on a 200-word calculator page ranking for this query, with no cancellation logic at all. Manglik dosha is a compatibility rule with documented exceptions, not a prediction about anyone’s lifespan.

Does Mangal dosha end after 28? What the texts actually say

You will hear from relatives that “Manglik dosha finishes after 28”. Search this and you will find it repeated on dozens of sites, usually hedged as “according to some astrologers”. Here is the honest position: the age-28 rule does not appear in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Muhurta Chintamani, or any other standard text on Kuja dosha. It is a folk rule, most likely derived from Mars maturing at around age 28 in the planetary-maturity (Graha Pakvata) scheme, which is a general principle and not a marriage-matching rule.

Many astrologers do soften an Anshik verdict for a groom or bride in their late twenties, and there is nothing wrong with that as a practical judgement — but it is a judgement, not shastra. Sahita does not apply the age rule automatically. If your chart has an uncancelled dosha at 24, it still has it at 30; what changes is how much weight your family chooses to give it. Chevvai dosham, Kuja dosham, Bhauma dosha: same dosha, different names

If you searched for a chevvai dosham calculator (Tamil), sevvai dosham, kuja dosha check (Telugu and Kannada), or angaraka dosha, you are looking for the same thing. Chevvai, Kuja, Angaraka and Bhauma are all names for Mars, and the six-house rule is identical across regions. The differences are in practice: South Indian matching is usually done alongside the 10 Porutham system rather than the 36-guna Ashtakoot, and some Tamil astrologers give extra weight to the Venus-based count.

Remedies for Mangal dosha

If the verdict stands after cancellations, the traditional remedies fall into three groups. None of them are mandatory, and none are needed if the dosha is cancelled.

• Matching, not fixing. The remedy most astrologers prefer is simply to choose a partner whose chart balances yours. That is the reason to check two charts, not one.

Frequently asked questions

Am I Manglik if Mars is in the 7th house from my Moon but not from my Lagna?

Technically yes, from the Moon chart — but this is the classic Anshik (partial) case and most astrologers rate it Low to Medium. The Lagna chart is primary, so a clean Lagna count carries more weight than a Moon-only flag. Can I check Manglik dosha without my birth time?

Partly. Mars and Venus barely move in a day and the Moon moves about 13 degrees, so the Moon- and Venus-based checks are usually stable across the whole date. Tick the “I don’t know the exact birth time” box and the tool runs those two and tells you whether the Moon verdict holds from midnight to midnight. The Lagna-based check cannot be done without a time, because the ascendant changes every two hours or so.

Is Manglik dosha checked differently for boys and girls?

No. The six houses, the three reference points and the cancellation rules are the same for everyone. Some sites ask for gender but it has no effect on the calculation, which is why this manglik calculator does not ask. Where gender does come up is in family practice: historically the girl’s dosha was scrutinised more harshly, which is a social habit rather than an astrological rule.

Can two Mangliks marry each other?

Yes — this is the pairing classical astrology actually recommends. When both partners have Mars in a dosha house, the doshas are held to cancel each other because the Mars energy is balanced on both sides. Severity should still be compared: a High dosha paired with a Low one is not a perfect balance, but it is far better than Manglik with non-Manglik in traditional reckoning. Which ayanamsa does this calculator use?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard used by the Indian government’s Rashtriya Panchang and by most matching software in India. The planetary positions come from a modern ephemeris, and the Mars sign and degree are shown on the result so you can compare with any other chart. If a pandit’s chart differs by a sign, the usual cause is a different ayanamsa or a birth time near a sign boundary.
